Why not just stuff the Lat and Long into strings? That's how the NMEA data is going to come to you anyway. Pass the strings back to the server and let it take care of the math. Unless you're trying to put a bomb down a smokestack, you really only need about 4 or 5 digits of precision to get good position.

I have a record store which comtains a series of jobs which include a pickup and a delivery. New jobs periodically are sent from the server and added to the record store. I need the ability to do the following:
1. Save any jobs that have been completed but not updated on the server.
2. Delete the existing record store.
3. Add the jobs from step 1 to a new record store.
4. Add the new work sent from the server.

My thought was to create an enumeration of the records to be retained. Dump these into a byte array, delete the existing record store, and then stuff these into the new record store. Is this the best way to do this? Is deleting all the unwanted records and adding the new ones considered a bad practice(I was told it was)?

Any thoughts greatly apreciated,

I'm running an app on Tomcat 4.1 and having some database issues. If my DB server goes down and comes back up, the app in Tomcat crashes and can't reconnect to the database. Is this expected behaviour? Any insight on what's going on and a fix/work around would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm a little confused about what this setting actually does. I've got an app I'm putting on putting on a Motorola i58sr phone. I've set the MIDlet-Data-Size in the JAD to be 24kb. 2 questions: 1-Does this allocate 24kb of the phone's memory to my application when it starts? 2-If I exceed 24kb does the RMS grow dynamically or am I stuck with only 24kb of storage space? 3-If the allocation can grow beyond and I assume shrink back to 24kb, what is the point of setting this to anything byt 1kb and letting the device handle the data size allocation?

Thanks,

I'm running an app on a Motorola i88s/i58sr using UDP. I open a DatagramConnection and send a message. I then listen on the same connection for a reply. DatagramConnection.receive(myDataGram). It doesn't appear that this will ever timeout. I am correct in this assumption? Is there any way to set the connection timeout? If not how can I handle anunresponsive server?

Is it possible to have the client app edit the JAD file?

I created a simple app using the the Wireless Toolkit sending datagrams to and from the server. It works fine in the emulator. I tried to add these classes to my app built with JBuilder X and now I get an error message from the emulator that I need to install the socks.jar package. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this? I am a Java newbie trying to port a .NetCF app to J2ME.

How would I be able to ensure uniqueness across sessions?

I have a wireless app that uses UDP for communication with the server. I need to create a unique sequence number for each message for my acknowlegement mechanism. I was planning on using getTimeInMillis, but apparently that is not available in J2ME. Does anyone have a good alternative to this? I'd like to use a long for the value. The sequence number needs to be unique only for one phone. The server uses getTimeInMillis quite nicely. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm a J2ME newbie looking for advice. I'm trying to create a form on a MIDP 1.0 phone that requires a textfield and a list. The user will type some text into the textfield and then click a command button. The value is stored in RMS and added to a list on the screen below the textfield. Later the user will come back to this screen and the stored list will be displayed. Then each time the user types in one of the values off the list, the item is removed from RMS and removed from the list on the screen. Think of it as adding and removing items from an inventory. I could just append text to the screen, but removing them later is beyond me. Thanks in advance. Todd
