Hi

I have some knowledge in java(3 java certifications), but completely new to testing(know almost nothing about testing). I would like to start reading some testing concepts(which are in high demand now). They say chances of getting a job increases when u know testing as well as Java(so that u can try both testing side(QA jobs) as well as Java(programming)). Can anybody please suggest where I should start(which books to buy, any software..etc).

I'm interested in joining in, but wanted to know if she replied to anybody because somebody earlier said, he didn't receive any reply from her even after 10days(i'm not sure, may be she's busy and that's why she might need more time to reply).

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for my mistake in my earlier post (referring "Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2: Study Guide" as Head First book)( I used Head First series books earlier for other certifications, so I assumed that the book for SCJD is also Head First ...). I edited my earlier post to avoid confusion to others.

If I have time to refer to only one book which one would that be?

To another of my question, I received answers from other ranchers saying Habibi's book can guide u well for ur project, but why was Habibi's book given only 8/10 horshoes?. Is there anything that's not covered for which I need to refer some other material?

(I already got very good replies from Frans, Andrew, Josh for other question related to this topic, but after seeing the "8/10 horshoes" for Habibi, I just want to know the reason why Habibi got only 8/10).


From Book reviews:

If I could only say one thing negative, It would be that I feel a couple, very small couple of issues where handled with more complexity than was needed.

Any idea about which area was handled with more complexity, if at all?(so that I'l not spend as much time on it).

Thank you for your reply. It's my observation that most of the people that is doing SCJD are the ones that have atleast some real work experience in the field. Do u think I can pass that assignment if I do it without any work experience?

Here's my background.

I don't have any work experience. I only did small examples from the java text books. I recently completed my SCWCD and SCBCD.

I am asking this question because u have real experience so u know how it would have been for u if didn't have any experience.

I ordered Habibi book, hoping I can start doing my assignment after I read the book once.

I have not yet downloaded the assignment(not bought the voucher yet). I read in the faq that there are now 2 different assignments for SCJD( "URLyBird" hotel reservation system, "Bodgitt & Scarper" contractors ). I am not sure which of those assignment is yours. Can you please explain a little more about your project.

I am sorry for my confusion, I just started researching about SCJD and don't have much knowledge about it yet.

Thanks a lot Jack Gold. You gave me the encouragement that I desparately needed to start SCJD. I tried searching the results forum, this scjd forum for that kind of info, but yours is truly useful for me. Thank you. I'l order the book today. Do you have any suggestion about what to do in the mean time( say 3,4 days to get the book delivered). I started reading sun's RMI tutorial( http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/rmi/overview.html), I feel it's really good.

I would like to take SCJD assignment, but as I don't have any experience I'd like to first get a feel of the assignment to get an idea before I take the real assignment. I'm not sure if any book introduces all the topics required to complete the real assignment( like RMI, sockets, design patterns... etc). The above site says it gives all the required info( and some extras like check points, mock essay tests...etc)

Please share your experiences with the above (or any other mock).

Thanks Frans for your quick and clear reply. From your experience, I am trying to guess how much time it might take for me to complete the assignment, may be more than 120 hours(because I don't have any experience). Your experience must have helped you a lot I guess.

So, those 90 hours for you were inlcuding the documentation I guess. I still need to read all those things(like RMI, locks ...etc)

In the sun's web site I found the following which got me into thinking...

... a fast programmer might create a solution in about twenty hours. A more typical expectation of a time requirement might be in the order of a working week. If you spend a lot more than two weeks on the project, you might well be creating something that is more detailed than is really required ...

Does it mean I can assume I might be able to complete the assignment in approximately (less than) 2weeks if I work approx 8hours a day? ( and may be a week or two more for documentation...etc)

I am totally confused about which certification to go for now that I completed scwcd and scbcd. I wanted to do SCJWS, but I'm hesitating because those things are completely new to me. I do not have any working experience at all, so I need something to boost my confidence as well as gives weight to my resume.

If I have only 1month of time(let's say 4hours a day on the average) to alott for certification, then which one can I do in that time? As I told earlier, I do not have any experience(which can help for SCJD) or any idea about web services(which can help SCJWS)? I don't want any disappointments after the trial, as that might affect my confidence to attend interviews, so I want to know which one I can finish in the given time frame.

I would like to get some input about what are the average times taken by people who do not have any experience at all, so that I can decide whether I can try SCJD or if I should go for SCJWS ( I know the time taken by the programmer varies depending on several factors like how experienced he is, how smart he is ...etc, but I would like to get just some rough idea of times taken by programmers without working experience).

I would like to get some input about SCDJWS. I would like to know how tougher it is when compared to other certifications like SCWCD or SCBCD.

The reason I am asking this question is that in the results forum I see very very few(I think not more than 3) people posting about their success in JWS exam whereas WCD and BCD have much more "passed" posts. Does it mean it's tougher or does it mean it doesn't have as much demand as the others?

I know "tough" is how u define it and how u look at it, but I mean to ask If ur not biased about the subjects (whether it's JSP or servlets( as in WCD) or EJB( as in BCD) or JWS)(i.e. if u treat them the same), I mean if u like all of these the same and if u have almost the same prior experience with any of these).

Another reason I'm thinking about this is that I do not see as many mockexams for JWS as for WCD or BCD.

So, can somebody please tell me if I can dare to attempt JWS? Here's my background info that is required:

I completed WCD with 91% and BCD with 95% and I had no prior experience with either JSP, Servlets or EJBs. I felt they r at almost the same difficulty level( I prepared for each of the exams, around 3weeks with 4hours a day on the average with HFJSP & HFEJB respectively).

can some body please tell what a "static class" is.

I know "static method" is a method which can be accessed without creating an instance of the class that has that static method, but I don't understand what this static class is.
