Hi,

I would like to request and get some feedback from women developers as it is an issue which mostly is faced by women. I had a baby 3 months back and am back to work after my maternity leave. I am really depressed about leaving my baby and really wish that I could be with my son. I am going to try asking for part-time or telecommuting options, but have little hope that I will get that. I am seriously thinking of quitting my job and taking a year's break. To give you an idea of my background : I have 8+ years of software development experience in the U.S. industry and currently work in the US.
My question is : have you any of done this and what was your experience ? Was it hard to get back into the workforce ? My biggest fear is that because it is the software industry, will I find another job if I quit now ?

Thanks,
Mona

Hi,

I have not posted though have been an active lurker for quite a long time now ! I am in a dilemma regarding my career and wanted to get some opinions from folks in the software/IT field.

I am a software developer with over 8 years of experience in the US software industry. I am currently working (in the US) but I am considering taking off for 1 year to take care of my infant son. I would really like to stay home to take care of my baby but fear that with the current state of the job market in the software field, it will be very hard for me to get a job again. In fact I see that the barrier to re-entry is higher in the IT area than compared to other fields, where people take off for 1 or 2 years and are able to comfortably re-enter their profession.

Do you think I will be harming my chances in employability by taking a year's gap or am I being paranoid here ? Has anyone (I guess some women developers may have done this) attempted this and what was your experience ?

Thanks !
Mona
