Before you start...

The CodeRanch is a pretty laid-back place. We're into helping people understand not only the "how" but also the "why" of complex technology and so we provide a place where you can ask "stupid" questions without fear of being flamed. We've found that one of the best ways to ensure civility is to require people to act like professionals and use their real names as Display Names and not use "handles" or "aliases". It's one of the few rules that we insist on.

We understand that there really are people whose names are Henry Kissinger, Sylvester Stallone, Harry Dresden, Bruce Wayne, William Gates and so forth. That's OK, providing you can produce your long-form Birth Certificate or some equally convincing proof of identity. But if you use a questionable display name, at a minimum it's going to interfere with your ability to get a timely answer because I generally don't share my awesome wisdom (hey! Stop laughing!) with pretenders. Instead, I'll be off at the Ranch HQ debating your sincerity with the enforcement crowd. Who may drop by and have a word with you.

So give me a break, OK? And if you missed the rules on display names when you signed up, let them know. Sometimes I'm not sure that they're visible enough.
